Chancellor opens new college bar

Lancaster University Chancellor Sir Christian Bonington got a flavour of student life when he officially opened the new bar at The County College this month.

The new County Bar project included the refurbishment of the former Cartmel Bar, games rooms, the porters lodge and coffee shop to provide a new social facility for The County College.

Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Wellings, County College Principal Professor David Smith and student representatives all attended the opening along with County Bar Manager Jeremy Bethell and a number of other Lancaster University college principals, deans and senior tutors.

The County College, originally built in 1969, is one of eight undergraduate colleges at Lancaster University. Each has its own distinctive identity, administration and social scene.

The design for The County College’s new social space was developed by HLM Architects (Sheffield) working closely with the College. Work began on site at the end of August 2005 and finished at the beginning of November 2005. Thompson Contracts Ltd, who also worked on Barker House Farm and Lonsdale Bar, were the main contractor.
