06/30/2005 10:21:38

Universities are not only for the young. In a unique programme for the over 45s, Lancaster University is opening its doors and inviting older people to explore the campus, attend lectures and seminars and to find out what university can offer them.

The University of Later Life runs from Monday 11 to Friday 15 July and offers a variety of activities including discussion groups, tours of the University facilities and the opportunity to discuss your own interests in higher education with an advisor. A special feature of the week will be an afternoon with Sir Chris Bonington, Lancaster University’s new Chancellor. Tasters of university teaching will include seminars on British Classical Music, genetics, Thatcherism, physics and the importance of spirituality and religion. There will be a number of practical sessions where you could become involved with compiling a group newspaper, honing creative writing or study skills, or learning a language. Visits on campus will include the University observatory and the second coldest place on Earth!

Marketing Officer Liz Mouel said, “This special week is open to everyone and no prior qualifications are needed. It does not matter at what point you left the educational system first time round, or what your qualifications are. If you want intellectual stimulation and you think that the resources of a university may be of interest, try the University of Later Life. Anyone over 45 is welcome to come along on to this programme starting 11 July and find out more about what universities can offer older people.”

Sessions will be informal and participants will be encouraged to share their opinions and experiences.

The events will take place on the Lancaster University campus, and the fee for the week is just £25. Those who wish to can stay in University accommodation; an informal social event will be organised each evening.
