10/30/2001 11:25:49

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and Universities UK commissioned report 'The Regional Mission, The Regional Contribution of Higher Education, The North West' was launched on Friday 12 October 2001 at the meeting of the Regional Assembly in Bolton. Authored by staff at the North West Universities Association (NWUA) and Higher Education North West (HENW), the report demonstrates that higher education institutions (HEIs) in the region are not simply educators, but also innovators, supporters of businesses, generators of jobs, major regional employers, and trainers of teachers and health workers.

 450,000 students study in the region’s HEIs

 Universities in the North West have combined annual turnover of over £1.2bn

 25,000 staff are employed in Higher Education

The North West Universities Association also gave a preview of KnowledgeNorthWest.com at the Regional Assembly on Friday 12th October 2001 at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton.

The aim of the KnowledgeNorthWest.com is to provide a point of access for businesses in the North West to the universities within the region.

Universities can contribute to increasing the competitiveness of businesses, through innovation, knowledge transfer, collaborative research and business support. The North West’s Universities have a long and proud tradition of training and research excellence, providing an abundant resource for the region’s business community. The expertise available to businesses and organisations is both diverse and substantial.

The service is now in operation, and will be launched to an audience of businesses and academic representatives on 26th November 2001.
