Thursday October 2nd saw the official launch of the newest part of Lancaster University Management School, The Institute for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development.
A combination of core staff, visiting fellows and entrepreneurship practitioners from the public and private sectors make up the driving force behind the institute, their goal being to create an environment within which international excellence in entrepreneurship research, education and outreach can flourish.
LUMS is one of the UK’s leading business schools, having achieved the maximum 5* ranking for research, the ‘excellent’ rating for teaching and Equis accreditation, and the new institute is the successor of the school’s Entrepreneurship Unit; and will build upon LUMS, and the Unit’s achievements.
The exchange of knowledge and experience with local businesses has been an important element of the unit’s work and will be key to the activities of the Institute. Much of the business support work is with North West based SMEs and is highly subsidised thanks to ERDF funding. The support is focused on a variety of areas including enterprise, marketing, corporate positioning, integrated learning and growth stimulation, although every support package is tailored to the client's needs. The Institute will also be working with larger companies, partly through the corporate enterprise initiative, and will be closely associated with the development of a new Productivity Centre for Lancashire West. The Director of the new Institute is Ellie Hamilton, while Prof Mary B. Rose joins the Institute to be Director of Research. Mary has recently been awarded a personal Chair and will be the first Professor of Entrepreneurship at the University.
