Island students visit Lancaster University

This is the third annual residential trip for year 12 students organised as part of the Islands Project, a direct partnership between schools from the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey and Lancaster University. The project is designed to help students make the best choices if they are considering Higher Education in the UK.
For many of the students this was their first time visiting a university and they said they enjoyed “seeing different aspects of campus” and “understanding what it’s like to be a student”.
The project includes academics visiting the schools on the islands delivering subject Master Classes as well as a three day residential trip on campus. This included developing and presenting a mock research proposal, academic workshops, sporting activities and social events.
Geoff Corke is the Head of Sixth Form at St Ninian’s School on the Isle of Man.
He said: ““The research project gave our students a legitimate opportunity to explore University resources and begin to undertake truly independent academic research. The organisation, provision and delivery of the experience were excellent on all accounts.”
Kieran James, who is the Director of Sixth Form Studies at Guernsey Grammar School said: “Our students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, found it highly insightful and are spreading the word to their peers about the merits of pursuing Higher Education – particularly at Lancaster University.”
