Cartmel win college enterprise competition

Over sixty students from all nine colleges took part in the contest held at Barker House Farm. The event challenged the students to work in teams and develop an investment winning pitch based upon business ideas, many of which were based on recent successful student and graduate start-ups from Lancaster supported by LUSU Involve Enterprise and the Northwest Enterprise Champion project, part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
After two gruelling hours of research and planning, the nine colleges pitched to a number of business experts including alumni entrepreneurs and Professor Chris May, associate dean for Enterprise in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences who recently launched the FASS Enterprise Centre.
Professor May said: “The college teams faced tough competition from each other, but the team that demonstrated the best teamwork and robustness under the Dragon’s fire won. The afternoon’s rounds demonstrated that students are innovative and entrepreneurial.”
Student Rebecca Milsted who is part of the Cartmel team said: “This competition was intense and exciting, I loved every minute!”
Fellow team team member Siana French said: “When the group and I started working together it felt like we were really onto something and I am extremely proud of our success!”
The Cartmel team will now go on to represent Lancaster University at the national pitching competition FLUX on March 27 and 28 in London. FLUX is organised by the Working Knowledge Group and the National Association of College and University Entrepreneurs (NACUE).
Enterprise Champion Jon Powell said: “I’d just like to wish the six students from Cartmel the very best of luck at FLUX 2012. It is an excellent opportunity to develop their commercial awareness and job winning enterprise skills and to meet contacts from industry. Let’s hope they can bring the title back to Lancaster!”
