Explore the past during Lancaster University's History Week

Lancaster University has just announced that it will be running a special week of short courses and free lectures for history buffs this May. History Week will take place from 10 - 18 May, and coincides with Adult Learners' Week, a national celebration of learning.

There are fifteen courses available and the range of topics offered during the week is very wide, covering many periods of history. You can find out about the Romans in Lunesdale and Edwardian Lancaster. You can discover how to use maps in the study of local history and look into the history of place names in South Lakeland. We'll find out about Lancashire in the Civil Wars, as well as Britain's industrial past. Each of the courses runs over two days and most take place in Lancaster and at Lancaster University, although there are also courses in Lytham St Annes, Whitehaven and Broughton in Furness. The courses cost just £25 (£11 concessions).

A highlight of this special week will be the free lunchtime lectures taking place on Tuesday 14, Wednesday 15 and Friday 17 May in Lancaster city centre. These will cover topics as diverse as Siberian Exile under the Tsars, Victorian Britons and Mediterranean Brigands, and Joseph Paxton, the designer of the Crystal Palace.
