Summer Degree Ceremonies

The University's Chancellor HRH Princess Alexandra will confer degrees at the University's degree ceremonies in July, including the following honorary degrees:

CHEN NAIFANG (Doctor of Laws) has been a major influence nationally on the reform of higher education in China for more than a decade. Following a distinguished career as both an academic and diplomat, she became in 1997 the President of Beijing Foreign Studies University, which for the last forty years has been the alma mater of almost all of the Chinese diplomatic corps. She has used this leadership position, at a time of great change in China, to advance significantly the development of relations between China and the rest of the world.

Fylde Ceremony, Tuesday, 15 July, 5 pm

STEPHEN COX, (Doctor of Science) a Lancastrian by birth, is a distinguished administrator who has guided some of the most significant institutions in British cultural and scientific life. His work has covered a wide spectrum of activities. He began his career with the British Council which represents British arts, learning and technology to the world. He became Director General of the Commonwealth Institute, which encourages educational and cultural co-operation throughout the Commonwealth. He was the Chief Executive of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, which works to strengthen plural democracies throughout the world. He is now the Executive Secretary of the Royal Society, the oldest scientific academy in the world, which, full of energy and purpose, remains the most esteemed institution at the heart of British science.

Cartmel Ceremony, Wednesday, 16 July, 5 pm

GAY WEBB (Master of Arts) played a leading role in student life in the early days of the University. From 1984 she played a central role in the development of the Lancaster University Graduate Association, through which the University maintains connections with its graduates. She imaginatively deployed LUGA to introduce a Careers Fair where graduates returned to advise current students on career choice. She also became a valued member of University Council, especially as Chair of its Welfare and Facilities Committee. This enabled her to work closely with students to develop projects such as the University's Pre-School Centre.
