Summer Street Party

06/22/2005 12:56:17

Lancaster University students celebrated the end of term with a summer extravaganza on the newest street on campus.

Students at the University teamed up with University Partnerships Programme (UPP) to lay on the summer street party at the heart of the new student residences development Alexandra Park.

Alexandra Park is the largest university new accommodation project in the country creating 3,405 new and replacement student rooms as well as social facilities, including a converted listed building - Barker House Farm.

This week three colleges located in Alexandra Park - Cartmel, Lonsdale and Graduate - came together to celebrate their new home. Graduate College, which is home to around 1,033 students, was extended and redeveloped in 2003 while Cartmel and Lonsdale moved into their new premises this academic year.

Thursday, June 23, saw students congregating on the new boulevard to soak up sounds including a Steel Band, The University Swing Band, a classical piano duet and a ceilidh band.

Attractions included market stalls, fairground games, a bungee run, bucking bronco and street entertainers.

It is hoped that the event will be the first of a series of annual student festivals at Alexandra Park

The festival begans at 12 and ended at 6pm. The rest of the University were also invited.

Davey Garland, Vice President of the Graduate Student Association, said: “It has been a wonderful experience for the colleges to work together to produce such a magic event which is for the whole University, not just the south campus. More importantly it is a free festival, and a tradition that I hope will be instilled for the next and following years when we hope it will be bigger and better.”

Clive Crawford, Managing Director of UPP, said: “The students at Lancaster University have been extremely patient as we have redeveloped the accommodation at Alexandra Park to deliver high quality, modern and safe rooms that will add to their university experience. We felt this end-of-year party would be a fitting way to celebrate both the achievements of the students and the success of the first year of the new residences.”

Lancaster university was rated 9th out of 190 institutions for best campus, in a national survey of undergraduate students.
