Lancaster International Concert Series - Lindsay Quartet

The Lindsay String Quartet is recognised as one of the world’s foremost string quartets. Now, after an incredible 39 years (and 20 years since the only change in personnel), the players have decided that this is to be their last season. In this farewell concert at the Lancaster International Concert Series, they play music by Haydn, Bartok and Beethoven, three composers whose works lie at the very heart of their repertoire. Don’t miss their last ever performance at The Great Hall, Lancaster University on Thursday 27th January at 7.30pm.

Their interpretations are rooted in the European tradition of great quartet playing, and the intensity, spontaneity and communicative power of their performances have made them favourites with audiences throughout the world. During their career they have performed over 300 works and are particularly acclaimed for their interpretations of Beethoven and Haydn, which many consider to be without equal for imagination and insight. Their complete cycles of the Beethoven quartets have become landmark events, most recently in London, Sydney, Tokyo, Edinburgh, Paris, San Francisco, and Princeton. They have pioneered all-Haydn programmes at venues ranging from the Bridgenorth Haydn Festival and the Sheffield Crucible to the Carnegie and Wigmore Halls, delighting audiences with Haydn’s variety and depth.

The Quartet play on a remarkable set of instruments: Peter Cropper on a Stradivarius from the Golden Period, Robin Ireland an Amati viola c.1630, while Ronald Birks and Bernard Gregor-Smith are very fortunate to be loaned the Campo Selice Stradivarius of 1694 and a Ruggieri cello of the same year.
