A Lancaster University Lecturer is taking performance to the great outdoors this month in an innovative piece of site-specific theatre.

Jack Scout by Sap Dance and Louise Ann Wilson Company is a new presentation by leading theatre makers Nigel Stewart – Senior Lecturer at the Institute for the Contemporary Arts in Lancaster University - and Louise Ann Wilson - an internationally renowned theatre artist who has just relocated to Lancaster.

The outdoor walking performance will take place at Jack Scout in Silverdale Saturday 18 – Sunday 26 September 2010.

The show uses music, voice, dance and art to uncover the secrets of this magical location.

Local birdwatchers and staff from RSPB Leighton Moss, National Trust wardens and volunteers, plant ecologists, butterfly specialists, local fishermen, and children and staff from the nearby Ridgeway Park School are some of the many local residents and experts who have helped Nigel and Louise develop the show.

The comforts of the theatre will be left behind as a guide takes just fifteen audience members at a time on a tide-related journey, walking through the heath, briefly out on the sands, climbing stiles and scrambling up rocky slopes.

Co-director Nigel Stewart said: “This is something altogether different from a play in the park. This is all about how the performing arts can come together to reveal the wonders of the natural world in surprising and delightful new ways. We’ve been developing this work for nearly two years, and we’re very excited about the opportunity to perform to local residents as well as audiences from London and other parts of the country who will be coming up especially to see the show and delight in Silverdale for the first time.”

Nigel Stewart is a dance maker and the Artistic Director of Sap Dance. He is Senior Lecturer at the Institute for the Contemporary Arts in Lancaster University. His last work, The Saturated Moment, was performed at the Royal Opera House. Louise Ann Wilson is an internationally renowned theatre artist who has just relocated to Lancaster. She creates site-specific performance and designs for theatre, dance and opera.

Also involved in the project are live-wire Bristol-based dancer Natasha Fewings, More Music’s Pete Moser, talented young local clarinettist and flautist Matt Robinson, and the inimitable vocalist Steve Lewis who currently plays for local band, Orchestre DC Dansette.

Tickets cost £10/£7 and can be booked at Lancaster Visitor Information Centre on 01524 582394 on online at www.bit.ly/JackScout.

Jack Scout is a Nuffield New Works Commission from Nuffield Theatre Lancaster, and it has also has been commissioned by Lancaster City Council.
