The Philharmonia of The Nations – A symbol of peace

02/19/2004 10:12:29

A multicultural orchestra featuring highly talented young musicians from over 40 countries will be visiting Lancaster University’s Great Hall on Tuesday 2nd March as part of Lancaster International Concert Series. Founded in 1995 by its conductor Justus Frantz the orchestra has performed over 1000 concerts around the world including performances in New York to celebrate United Nations Day at the request of Kofi Annan, a papal audience in Rome and concert given in the cupola of the Berlin Reichstag to protest against rightwing radicalism in Germany (at the request of the German Federal President Johannes Rau). They were also the official orchestra chosen by Placido Domingo for the Operalia.

Justus Frantz

For 20 years Justus Frantz has been internationally successful both as a pianist and as a conductor. He is a great supporter of young musical talent. It was while working with Leonard Bernstein that he adopted his credo ‘lets make music as friends’. Bernstein’s dream of an international, young, professional orchestra led Justus to form the Philharmonia of the Nations.

His discoveries include star violinist Midori, pianist Evgeny Kissin and violinist Maxim Vengerov.

“An emotional evening; the orchestra, formed into one body by the conductor. World Class; the magical moments which they created could be felt in the concert hall”.
