An exhibition of watercolours and oil paintings by Royal Academician, Norman Adams will be on show in the main gallery space at the Peter Scott Gallery, Lancaster University, from 10 January until 18 March 2005. This will be a retrospective exhibition, highlighting aspects of Adams’ long and distinguished career.

Born in 1927 in Walthamstow, Norman Adams studied at the Royal College of Art from 1948 until 1951. He had his first solo exhibition in 1952 at Gimpel Fils Gallery, London. Adams was elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1967, and a full Royal Academician in 1972.

Adams was Head of Painting at Manchester College of Art between 1962 and 1970, and later worked as a Visiting Tutor of Art at Leeds University (1973-76). In 1981 he took up the post of Professor of Painting at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne; a position which he held for five years. In 1986 he was elected Keeper of the Royal Academy.

The exhibition includes a range of works, from early paintings and sketchbooks to large-scale watercolours completed in 2000. The exhibition features a number of paintings based on the different landscapes which have influenced Adams’ work, including the Yorkshire Dales, the Scottish island of Scarp, Italy and Provence. A number of works are based upon biblical stories, such as ‘Jacob and the Angel’ and ‘Expulsion from the Garden’. Adams’ has completed several church commissions including the 14 Stations of the Cross at St. Mary’s RC Church in Manchester.

The exhibition has been curated by the Peter Scott Gallery. An illustrated colour catalogue is available featuring an essay by the poet, novelist and dramatist Glyn Hughes. Most of the works in the exhibition are available for sale. The gallery is a member of the Arts Council of England’s ‘Own Art’ interest free loan scheme; loans of up to £2,000 are available for the purchase of artworks.
