Red Priest - the Cirque du Soleil of baroque performance ensembles at Lancaster Universisty

Red Priest, one of the major success stories on the international early music scene today, will be performing in The Great Hall, Lancaster University on Thursday 11th March 2004.

Named after the flame-haired priest, Antonio Vivaldi, this extraordinary English ensemble has redefined the art of baroque music performance, combining the fruits of extensive research with swashbuckling virtuosity, creative re-composition, heart-on-sleeve emotion and compelling stagecraft. The group performs largely from memory, allowing an operatic level of freedom and interaction, and its programs are drawn from myriad baroque sources to create a kaleidoscopic range of moods and colours.

Formed in 1997, Red Priest now gives over 60 concerts a year in some of the most prestigious venues in Europe and the USA together with Radio and TV broadcasts and an exclusive series of CD recordings for Dorian (USA). Their unique and extraordinary recording of Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’ was released in the UK in October 2003.

During this season Red Priest’s engagements have included a month-long tour of Australia, two extensive visits to the USA, filming for BBC4 television and five concerts in Italy as well as visits to many other wonderful venues.

This will be their first visit to Lancaster International Concert Series and they are very much looking forward to being part of this long-established and highly respected series of concerts.
