40th Anniversary Concert in honour of HRH Princess Alexandra

The BBC Philharmonic returned to play in the Great Hall, Lancaster University on Tuesday 7 December at 7.30pm as part of Lancaster International Concert Series. This special concert celebrated Lancaster University’s 40th Anniversary and was in honour of Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra, Chancellor of the University since 1964.

The BBC Philharmonic’s Italian Principal Conductor, Gianandrea Noseda, has forged an immensely strong bond with the players, making a great impression on audiences and critics alike with his idiomatic flair. One of Britain’s finest pianists, Christian Blackshaw, goes Gallic, taking the brilliant solo role in Ravel’s glittering, jazz-infused concerto. For Noseda, Beethoven remains the most revolutionary and innovative composer, ‘..each symphony still speaks to us with the same freshness, same power and same integrity’.

Gianandrea Noseda has earned an international reputation as an outstanding conductor. He has appeared with international orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris. As Principal Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Gianandrea Noseda will record on the Chandos Records label.

Christian Blackshaw Piano

British pianist Christian Blackshaw has performed throughout the UK and the world with many distinguished orchestras and conductors. He opened the South Bank’s 2002/2003 International Piano Series with a commemorative recital for Sir Clifford Curzon at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. Other engagements include playing with the BBC Philharmonic at the BBC Proms, White Nights Festival Tercentenary Celebrations and a first appearance with the Baltimore Symphony conducted by Yuri Temirkanov.
