RNCM Chamber Orchestra

01/28/2005 12:53:37

The popular RNCM Chamber Orchestra returns to Lancaster International Concert Series on 3rd February in The Great Hall, Lancaster University at 7.30pm. Baldur Brönnimann conducts the programme, which juxtaposes the works of four very different composers.

French cellist Aurelienne Brauner, who studies at the RNCM with Karine Georgian, is the soloist in Schumann’s Cello Concerto, one of the most romantic cello concertos, and a work that reveals the rich, nostalgic poetry of Schumann. The programme also includes the ‘Stravinskian’ neo-classical style of Hans Werner Henze’s attractive Symphony No.1 and is completed by Beethoven’s gently exuberant Eighth Symphony in which the music is propelled by the composer’s inventive zest.

The RNCM Chamber Orchestra is one of the major ensembles at the Royal Northern College of Music through which students gain their orchestral training within the Schools of Strings and Wind and Percussion. The ensemble performs in public concerts, and is a regular part of the Lancaster International Concert Series, always attracting an audience that’s eager to see and hear the talented young musicians of the future.

Baldur Brönnimann Conductor

Baldur trained at the Basel Music Academy, before holding a fellowship at the UK’s Royal Northern College of Music. He now regularly returns to the College as Visiting Tutor in Conducting. In recent seasons, Brönnimann has conducted the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra and Iceland Symphony Orchestra. In his role as Young Conductor in Association with the Northern Sinfonia, Brönnimann collaborated with leading international soloists including Evelyn Glennie and Tasmin Little, premiered several works by major British composers, and appeared at major festivals. Following his debut with the Hallé Orchestra in 2001, he has been back there several times, and has conducted them both at home and on tour.
