£6.3m for Lancaster University Science

Lancaster University will receive £6.3m in Government funding for science.

Stephen Byers, the Trade Secretary and Cabinet Minister for Science and David Blunkett, the Education Secretary, today announced details of £675m boost to science as part of the Science Research Investment Fund(SRIF) in partnership with the Wellcome Trust to invest in scientific excellence in UK Universities.

Lancaster's share of the money will fund research equipment and building in the natural and social sciences.

Lancaster's Dean for Research, Professor Peter Diggle said: 'The size of the award reflects Lancaster's strong research record, as evidenced by RAE grades and research grant income.'

'Priorities for spending the money are still to be finalised, but are likely to include new research buildings and equipment across the range of eligible research areas.'

Decisions will be made within weeks.

The investment in world class research facilities in UK Universities will enable scientists to continue vital research in areas such as the search for new drugs and diagnostics to treat killer diseases such as cancer, develop new technologies and further understand man's impact on the environment.
