RUSKIN LIBRARY EXHIBITION

The first exhibition for 2005-6 is 'Ruskin's organic vision - nature, life and art' (until 22 December), curated by Alan Davis, Visiting Fellow in the Ruskin Programme at Lancaster University. Following a previous exhibition on Ruskin and Printmaking (2003), to which Tate Britain made the major loan of William Blake's colour print 'Newton', Alan will develop the idea of Ruskin having formed what we might now call an holistic view of nature, life and art. This 'organic vision' may be seen to embrace such concepts as 'savageness,' 'changefulness' and 'naturalism' (as discussed by Ruskin in 'The Nature of Gothic'). The exhibition will show how Ruskin arrived at these basic principles, using drawings and watercolours from the permanent collection, but it also aims to demonstrate that his 'organic vision' can still enrich our understanding and enjoyment of art today. The exhibition draws on a substantial number of loans representing a range of fine and decorative art, from ancient oriental ceramics to contemporary art and studio pottery.

Kazuko Hohki - Proof For The Existence of Borrowers

Singer, musician, animator, director and storyteller, Kazuko Hohki provides delightful Evidence for the Existence of Borrowers. Johnathon Pram - Living Room & cassettessac

A big hit in last year’s Autumn 04 season, we now present two earlier episodes from the life of Johnathon Pram - an individual struggling to endure the stressful mechanics of a modern world gone wrong. The shows are preceded by live music from Manchester band

Bedlam Dance: Shrink’d

An incredible mix of high quality dance and high-tech installation comes to the Nuffield Theatre.

The Performance: Set in a brightly-lit square, surrounded by the audience, Shrink’d is a dance of extreme close-ups. Bite-size movements are interlaced with secret messages dedicated to unsuspecting members of the audience. Highlighting the intricacy of the body and the immediacy of performance, Shrink’d plays with the viewer as witness and accomplice.

The Installations: Before and after the show you are invited to journey through a landscape of interactive environments. Two at a time, you encounter a projected image of a dancer, subtly affecting her movement as you pass by. Customised VJ decks offer a chance to scratch classic dance films on a giant screen, while a tiny virtual dancer performs to an audience of one.

A collection of Paintings and Textiles by Chris Matthiessen. October 31st 2005 to January 31st 2006. The artist will be visiting LEC on Wednesday 2nd November 10am – 12noon to meet people for coffee and discuss her work.
