Lancaster students meet Malaysian Prime Minister
Students from Lancaster University on an international volunteering trip abroad have met the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
The students were attending a conference in Malaysia called “Making A High Income Nation A Reality” where the Prime Minister Dato' Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak was the guest speaker.
One of the student delegation, Erica South, a recent Lancaster University graduate said: "It was an extraordinary opportunity to be at such an important conference and hear about the latest government policies."
The students also met the Chairman of the Sunway Group, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Jeffrey Cheah. Sunway University College is Lancaster University’s partner institution in Malaysia.
The Prime Minister was the guest speaker at the conference where he talked about the importance of education for Malaysia in reaching the status of a developed nation. He then spent time talking with the student delegation about the international volunteering programme and about their stay in Malaysia.
Liam Goulding, a second year Lancaster University law undergraduate, said: “It was an unforgettable end to the trip leaving me wanting to learn more about the policies on my return especially because it relates to my Law Degree."
History undergraduate Josie Wales said: “It was exciting learning about Malaysian politics firsthand.”
The visit to Malaysia was organised as part of an international student volunteering programme set up by the Lancaster University Students’ Union (LUSU) involve – the UK’s biggest and most successful university volunteering unit.
Kim Warrillow, LUSU involve’s international intern said: “We had the opportunity to speak with the Prime Minister of Malaysia and the Chairman of Sunway Group. We discussed the LUSU involve international programme and he was pleased we had enjoyed our stay in Malaysia.”
The students were among a total of 55 from Lancaster who have flown out to two of Lancaster’s partner institutions - GD Goenka World Institute, India and Sunway University in Malaysia - to take part in a scheme which sets out to develop global leaders of the future.
